1.
I have just finished registering an item and uploading images, what happens next?

Once you have filled out all relevant information on the Property Registration page and submitted the page to the registry, your property information is now registered. You now have the option to upload photos and images. You can upload any photos / images at the time of the property registration or you can come back later and edit your account and add or change these photos / images.

All property information that is registered is stored in our Secure Data Storage & Management System under your account file. This information can only be accessed by you and any of the three entities (Law Enforcement, General Public, Product Manufacturer) that you granted access to on the Property Registration page.

Once you have submitted the completed Property Registration page for a particular item you can choose to upload a photo / image, log out, or add another item.

2.
What is a serial number?
Abbreviation: S/N. A serial number is a series of numbers and/or letters assigned by a manufacturer to its products. Most complex products (products that are made up of many components) are issued a serial number. Examples of these types of products are your car (called a VIN number), TV, computer, a major appliance, etc.. A manufacturer may produce hundreds of thousands of the same exact product that may look exactly alike, but the only distinct feature is the serial number that is issued to the product to separate it from all the rest. Depending on the system used by a manufacturer to assign their products a serial number, they can tell such things such as the date of manufacture, the assembly line it was made on, the original color, original options, and more importantly, the number in sequence it is. In theory, no two serial numbers are the same.
3.
Do all products that are manufactured have a serial number?
No, many non-complex products (products that are not made up of many components) do not have a serial number. Examples of these types of products may be your furniture (couch, dinning room table, chairs, cabinets, etc.), or individual hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, sockets, etc..).
4.
If an item that I want to register does not have a serial number, can I create one?

Yes, on the Property Registration page, in the Required Field box, when entering the property serial number, you are asked if the serial number is manufacturer assigned or owner assigned. A manufacturer assigned S/N is one that is already labeled on your item at the time of purchase from the store or factory.

An owner assigned serial number can also be called an "Identification Number." This is a series of numbers and or letters that an individual creates and "engraves" on the property being registered. For example; lets say you own an antique chair that is very valuable to you, and you want to register this item on our system. More than likely this chair does not have a serial number issued to it by the manufacturer. The owner can create their own unique identification number (we suggest at least 6 characters), and engrave this number in an inconspicuous location on the chair, and then register that number in our system. This along with any photos will be very helpful in the recovery process of this valuable item if it is ever lost or stolen.

5.
What is the main purpose for registering my property with National Serial Number Registry?

While a serial number is a very effective tool in the process of manufacturing, we feel that its additional potential is not being properly utilized when these products leave the factory floor and end up in your home or place of business. National Serial Number Registry has developed this system of enabling the product owner to use this distinct serial number along with all other identification numbers, and register them on our Secure Data Storage & Management System. By creating an account, the owner of any kind of valuable property can register these items and include any photos and or images on our system, thus declaring that they are the rightful owners of the property and establishing a "Reference of Ownership".

This system can be compared to the current systems in place in your State - Department of Motor Vehicles for registering your car, truck, or boat. Once registered it can be recovered anywhere in the world, and your contact information can instantly be found.

6.
Whats does Reference of Ownership mean?

By creating an account with nsnr.com, answering all the relevant questions on the Product Registration page, and uploading any related photos / images of the item being registered, you are declaring that you are the rightful owner of this property. You have now created a Reference of Ownership.

Let's say for example that if a law enforcement officer were to recover your lost or stolen property and entered the serial number into our system. If you authorized law enforcement access to your contact information, then your name and contact information would instantly appear as the registered owner. Now the officer has relevant information to use for finding the property owner and returning it.

National Serial Number Registry is not a government agency so therefore we cannot issue "Title of Ownership". Title of Ownership exists when a government entity recognizes that you are the owner of a particular item or property. Then that government entity will issue a title (i.e. in the case of car, truck, boat, etc.) or a Deed (i.e. in the case of real estate, land, etc.).

7.
What happens if two different people register the same item?

If two different people try to register the same exact item with the same exact serial number, the system will accept the registration information and photos for both items. Many times an item is sold to another party or property is divided under unfortunate circumstances such as divorce or bankruptcy. The previous owner may have originally registered the item with nsnr.com, then sold or lost the property. The new owner may want to register the property, so our service will accept the registration to save the new registrant the time and aggravation associated with contacting the old owner to de-register the item on nsnr.com so that our system will accept the registration.

In the event that two of the same items with the same serial numbers are registered in our system, if a serial number search is performed, both entries with both party contact information will be displayed. On the photo / image upload page we suggest that the registrant upload a copy of the receipt or invoice of purchase. So, in theory, if both entries are displayed and both parties uploaded a copy of the receipt or invoice, then the one with the most current proof of purchase is the rightful owner. Even if neither party uploads any kind receipt or invoice, at least there is some kind of reference of ownership. If it is a police officer trying to return property, the officer can contact all parties that are claiming ownership and make the determination of who is the rightful owner. If it is a manufacturer seeking to recall a product, they can contact all parties claiming ownership.

8.
What stops someone from stealing my property and registering it as their own with nsnr.com?
National Serial Number Registry will accept all registration entries as described in Question 7. It is very unlikely that someone who has stolen property would register the property with National Serial Number Registry. If your property was stolen and you have the property information and serial number, a Law Enforcement Officer could perform a serial number search and immediately find the contact information of that person wrongfully claiming ownership of the property.
9.
Once I register an item, how long is it registered for?
Your property registration for each item is active for one year after the date of registration. You will be notified by e-mail several weeks before your property registration expires to remind you to renew the registration.
10.
Why can't I register my property for more than one year at a time?
All property registration entries must be updated annually. We want to encourage you to take a few moments every year to review all the items registered in your account and update any information, delete any sold or discarded property registrations, and add any new valuable property for good record keeping.
11.
What happens if I registered many items, but at different time of the year?
Each property registration is active for one year. This is on a per item basis. Each distinct item will have its own property registration expiration date depending on when it was registered. You will be notified several weeks before the expiration of each and every item.
12.
What happens if I do not have time to complete the registration of an item?
The only information that is required at the time of registration is the property name and serial number. All other information, including the access control selections, and the photo upload can be editied or changed at any time after the item is registered.
13.
What happens if I register an incorrect property name or serial number?
It is important that the name and serial number of the item that you are registering is correct. This is mainly for the purpose of an effective serial number search. Once registered, if a mistake was made, the only way to correct the mistake is to delete the registration and re-register the item.
14.
Why can't I change the property name and serial number once the registration is submitted?

The only way to change the property name and serial number once registered is to delete the file completely and re-register the item. This is why it is very important to enter the correct name and serial number during the registration process. In the serial number portion of the registration page, the serial number must be entered twice. We suggest that you do not copy the serial number entry above, but rather copy the serial number from the item again. This will ensure that you enter the correct serial number before submitting the registration. All the other information, including the photos and images related to a particular item registration can be changed and updated as often as needed without affecting the registration of the item.

15.
When a law enforcement officer performs a serial number search, can they see all of the property that I have registered with nsnr.com?
No, when a Law Enforcement Officer recovers your property and enters the serial number of that item into our Law Enforcement Serial Number Search system, only your contact information and that specific item information will be shown. And that specific property information will only be shown if you authorized law enforcement to obtain your contact information (controlled on the property registration page).
16.
When the general public performs a serial number search, can they see all of my contact information and all the property that I have registered with nsnr.com?

No, when a Good Samaritan finds your lost property and performs a serial number search on the nsnr.com home page, the only information that will be released is your name, phone number, e-mail address and that specific item information. Your home address and other registered property information are not made available.

An extra security feature of our system to protect your privacy is incorporated in the General Public Lost-n-Found feature of our system. The only time your information will be displayed during a serial number search is only if you change your item status to Missing or Stolen from the View My Items page, and only if you authorized the general public to obtain your contact information (controlled on the property registration page).

17.
How does a manufacturer obtain my contact information, and what prevents them from using my contact information for advertisement and solicitation purposes?

If a manufacturer needs to recall a product that may be defective, the manufacturer or distributor can request a list of the contact information of all the registered product owners that are registered with National Serial Number Registry. The manufacturer or distributor must click on the initial application link on the lower left hand corner of the home page and answer all the questions on the form and submit it. A member of our staff at nsnr.com reviews the application and verifies all the information provided. We then perform a detailed search of our records to find all the products that meet the criteria called out for on the application. Our search program will only display the contact information of the products that match the product information that was requested, and if the registered owner has authorized us to release their contact information to the manufacturer.

Before we send this list of product owners to the manufacturer or distributor, we send a legal agreement for the manufacturer or distributor to sign promising not to use this list for any other purpose but to contact the owner of the product for the sole purpose of a factory recall. National Serial Number Registry is very adamant about protecting our customers from unwanted advertisement and solicitation. We have several fail safe methods of ensuring that the contact list that we provide to a manufacturer is used solely for a factory recall. If we discover that this list was used for any other purpose such as a marketing tool, we will take immediate legal action against that company.

18.
What if I just want to register my property for record keeping and accounting purposes, and I do not want law enforcement, the general public, or manufacturers to have access to my contact information?

Many consumers and business owners alike do not want anyone else to have any kind of access to their contact information. They utilize our service for the sole purpose of better record keeping, accounting, and to have this important information stored in a safe, secure, off-site location.

During the initial registration of an item, you may answer "NO" to all three questions regarding who can or cannot view your contact information. But you can always come back at a later date and change these options. Lets say for example that you selected "NO" to all three questions on the Property Registration page, and then some time later your property is stolen, you can simply log in to your account, select View My Items, select the Edit option of the item that was stolen, and change the your answer to the question asking if law enforcement can view your contact information. Now if a Law Enforcement Officer recovers your property and performs a serial number search in our system, your contact information will now be made available.

19.
Why does National Serial Number Registry sell an Electric Engraving tool?
An Electric Engraving Tool is a hand held electric tool used for engraving scripture on an object. Most engravers will work on metal, plastic, and some glass surfaces. We sell this tool on our website because we suggest that all property owners use this tool to engrave the serial number in an inconspicuous place on the item. The main reason is so that if the "data tag" is ever lost or removed from an item, the serial number will still be permanently engraved on the object, and it will still be possible to track this item on our website. (A data tag is usually a decal or plate affixed to a product by a manufacturer which contains all the identification information such as the model #, part #, and more importantly, the serial number.)
20.
Why does National Serial Number Registry sell decals?

National Serial Number Registry sells two sizes of high quality metallic nsnr.com decals on this website. The small decals are designed to be applied to your smaller property such as your computer, printer, TV, video game system, etc.... The larger decals are designed to be applied to larger equipment such as your air compressor, major appliances, forklift, etc.....

We feel that in certain circumstances, by applying an nsnr.com decal to these items, it may deter the theft of this property. The thief will now know that this particular item is registered and is easily traceable, making this item more dangerous to possess and harder to sell.

In the case of the item being lost, if a Good Samaritan finds your property and wishes to return it to you, they will know to go to the nsnr.com website to perform a serial number search to easily find your contact information.

If you choose to apply an nsnr.com decal to any of your property, it is important that you engrave the serial number on the actual item. If a thief knows that the item is registered with nsnr.com, then they may try and remove the data tag which carries the product serial number. If the serial number is engraved on the item, then the thief will have to not only remove the data tag, but also disfigure the actual item to remove the engraved serial number, thus making the item less valuable if they attempt to sell it.

21.
Why do you suggest that I upload a photo of the actual item being registered, a photo of the data tag (if possible), and a copy of the receipt (if available)?

We suggest that you upload a photo of the actual item being registered mainly for positively identifying your property. Most items that one owns usually gets altered in some way over the course of time. Maybe a decal, scratch, or painted another color, these distinct characteristics make the item being registered unique and easier for someone else to identify.

We suggest a photo of the data tag if possible. Sometimes the data tag is too small or distorted to get a clear photo of the information printed on it. But if it possible, it is helpful in positively identifying the item being registered.

We also suggest that you upload a photo or scanned image of the actual receipt or invoice of purchase if available. This is helpful for the obvious reasons of establishing good reference and proof of ownership for law enforcement and insurance claims purposes.

The above suggestions are completely optional but strongly recommended. You also have the option to log in to your account with nsnr.com and upload, change, or delete any of the photos or images at any time.

22.
What is a "Data Tag"
A data tag is usually a decal or plate affixed to product by a manufacturer which contains all the identification information such as the model number, part number, and more importantly, the serial number. It usually located on the back side or bottom of an item
23.
Am I required to upload a photo and or image of the item being registered?
No, this feature is completely optional, but it is recommended for identification purposes.
24.
What if I don't have any photos or images of the property being registered at this time, can I come back and add them later?
Yes, many times consumers and business owners will want to register their property right away once they learn of our service, but do not have any related photos or images of the item being registered. Once your item is registered, you can log into your account at any time and add, delete, or update any related photos and or images of the item.
25.
I am having problems uploading photos and images of the item that I am registering.

The instructions for uploading photos and images of your items are listed on the right-hand side of the Image Upload page. Follow these instructions step by step.

Many times the photo or image file that you are trying to upload into our system is too large. In an effort to keep our service costs down, our system restricts the size of the photo / image file. If the file size is larger than 150,000 bytes (per photo / image file) then when you perform the initial Check before uploading, then you will get a message telling you that the file is to large and needs to be resized. The actual file size and dimensions will also be displayed. The desired photo / image size is 150,000 bytes or less per photo / image, Height = 300 or less, and Width = 400 or less.

There are Photo Resizing programs available that enable you to resize your photo and image files. We provide a link to a free, easy to use Photo Resizing program available that can be downloaded into your computer and used to resize your photos or images to fit our Image Up-Load requirements (click here). If you choose to use this program; simply change the Width to 400 or less, and the quality to 80%. This will automatically change the Height dimension and byte size to the appropriate sizes.

26.

If you have selected YES to the question regarding General Public Search Access, then only if you have reported your item Missing or Stolen will your contact information be displayed (name, phone number, & e-mail only, not your address) during a General Public Lost & Found Search if your property is recovered.

27.

What happens if my missing item is found or recovered?

If your property is found or recovered, simply log into your account, go to the View My Item section and select the Report Found tab. Agree to the terms of service and answer the following question that appears. This will remove the "Missing Flag", the missing information that you provided (which is viewed by Law Enforcement), and disable the General Public Lost & Found Search Access for that particular item.

28.
Is National Serial Number Registry a government entity trying to collect information about my personal assets?

No, National Serial Number Registry is not a government entity, and we are not collecting your property information for any government entity. We do offer our services free to Law Enforcement agencies nation wide to perform serial number searches on our system for the sole purpose of stolen property recovery. None of your personal information is reported to any third party other than what is clearly stated throughout this website.

Contrary to what some government conspiracy theorist may claim, we do not believe that the Federal Government is interested in knowing about your lawn mower, DVD player, and bicycle for any reason other than consumer safety issues. Our service was created simply to help consumers and business owners alike to protect, track, and recover their valuable assets.

29.
Is National Serial Number Registry affiliated with any kind of marketing or advertisement companies?

No, National Serial Number Registry is not affiliated with any kind of marketing or advertisement companies. National Serial Number Registry does advertise our services in various ways. We may indorse a product or service that we feel is helpful to our customers. We understand the growing and annoying problem of Pop-Ups, Spy ware, unwanted advertisement e-mails, and other forms of aggressive advertisement and marketing. National Serial Number Registry does not sell or rent any of your personal information to any third party.

30.

When I go to the nsnr.com website, I am experiencing "Pop-Ups" and other unwanted advertisements.

National Serial Number Registry does not accept advertisements and does not currently have any advertisement agreements with any advertisement or marketing entity. Your computer is most likely infected with some type of Spy ware which monitors your online activity and inserts unwanted advertisements. It is common to have these types of programs inserted into your computer when you visit certain websites.

You can download programs from the internet that search and remove these spy ware programs (usually for free). We suggest that you make sure that these Spy ware programs are removed from your computer before logging into your account with nsnr.com and registering any items.
